Quilts For Kids
By the age of 7, children from the Boudhanath neighbourhood of Kathmandu, especially girls, are sent into the streets to beg.
Many women in the community are excellent quilt-makers – with a skilful and imaginative ability to describe their world through needle and thread. Quilts for Kids seeks to empower these women by giving them an opportunity to turn their traditional skills into income for their families.
The program teaches young women a marketable craft and enhances the overall standing of women in the community through the sale of quilts.
Matt, Will and Mandy recently had the pleasure of spending time with James in Nepal who founded Quilts for Kids. They used their spare time in between jobs capturing enough footage to help James showcase what he's working towards in Nepal.
There mission is to provide work for economically-challenged women and to finance education for underprivileged children. The project employs women who create hand-sewn quilts incorporating found and up-cycled fabrics.
You can purchase a quilt here and know the purchase price of each quilt funds school tuition, school uniforms, shoes, pencils, books and backpacks for the children of the quilters.
Thank you to James for hosting our team at your wonderful home, introducing us to Quilts for Kids and inviting us on this journey. It’s inspiring to see the changes Quilts for Kids is having on families and communities in Kathmandu and we hope your story inspires the next generation of #changemakers.
