Becky Lee
As a dancer in some of London’s most iconic musicals including Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, On The Town, White Christmas and Hello Dolly as well as dancing with Sarah Brightman’s European Tour, Rebecca Lee’s career has taken her all around the world. You might even have spotted her as part of the cast in Mama Mia the movie, as well as presenting on Nickelodeon.
As a photographer, Rebecca brings a creative eye, natural energy and a keen sense of artistic storytelling to her work. ‘To me, the best thing about photography is being able to find someone’s story and capture it in a single moment. That’s what truly inspires me.’
‘It’s hard to find another career that gives you such artistic freedom and enjoyment as dance. But to me, being a photographer is very close to the creative focus and energy you feel as a dancer. It’s essential to translate the raw beauty and emotive storytelling of a shoot through your lens, and be poised ready to capture that key moment. In dance it’s the climax of a performance, for example where the dancer jumps so high they look as if they’re never coming down.’
The most memorable part of her career has been the people she’s met along the way. ‘You just can’t underestimate the importance of good relationships and surrounding yourself by like-minded people, stunning places and beautiful art that inspires you - that’s the key to constantly growing, improving yourself and your skill.’
Recent Projects
Ali Jiear
Australian-born Ali Jiear first met Studio M’s photographer Becky Lee when they performed together in ‘On the Town’ at The London Coliseum in 2005.
As is the nature of the entertainment industry, their paths have crossed several times since, and their friendship has been maintained by organic connection and mutual events.
Becky shot some website photos for Ali back in 2016, and was excited to create some new and diverse content when she got in touch again at the beginning of this year.
Ali needed images for a range of purposes, including images for her new show, entitled ‘The Frank and Ella Show’, which celebrates Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra’s music, as well as photos to showcase her singing and gigging lifestyle. She also required headshots for her West End and TV auditions. To add a further string to her bow, Ali also wanted to capture her recent certification as a Civil Funeral Celebrant, officially leading non-religious funerals.
